Papanicolaou Stained Slides Analysis

Papanicolaou Examples

Cytology exams are analyses made using microscopes to evaluate slides prepared with small sets of cells. Exfoliative cytology uses cells that naturally slough off from the mucosa, making it possible to detect alterations through a non-invasive and low-cost sample acquisition technique.

To highlight the cells’ desired features, a staining technique must be used. The most commonly used one in exfoliative cytology is the Papanicolaou staining, which is an easy, well diffused and low-cost slide preparation technique.

In this research, the analysis of Papanicolaou stained exfoliative cytology images aims to early detect cell alterations that may indicate the development of oral cancer. The cases of this type of tumor are growing, comprising around 350.000 of the new cancer cases around the world and around 175.000 deaths in 2018.
